Game Recap October 16, 2010
The Richland Bombers fought through the dual distractions of Senior Night and Homecoming and cruised to an easy 34-7 win over the Walla Walla Blue Devils.
Remembering from last week's 193 yard passing performance, Colter Quick launched the first play of the game by launching his first pass 43 yards to Tyler Powell. After a short run by Jake McKinney, Quick landed two more passes to Elijah Gardaya, first for 11 yards and the last for 10 yards, a touchdown, and a quick 7-0 lead, no pun intended. The first drive took all of one minute and 43 seconds. Quick ended up with another 182 yards passing and for the second week in a row, the Bombers were almost evenly split between their rushing and passing production.
Walla Walla then returned the kickoff 46 yards and had a first and ten at the Bomber 47. Before the first play could be written in the books, the Blue Devils had two holding penalties for minus 17 yards but soon gained them all back on a pass interference penalty. With a fresh set of downs, the Blue Devils ran headlong into the Bomber defenese.
After exchanging punts, the Bombers were once again on patrol and quickly chewing up yardage in large chunks. Unfortunately, instead of being up 14-0, the Bombers fumbled and the Blue Devils' Brett Christina pounced on the ball. Richland's defense stiffened again and coupled with a 16 yard punt, the offense had the ball again at the Blue Devil 30. The Bombers were then able to finally get the 14 points when Quick hit Gardaya one more time with an 11 yard touchdown pass.
The story of this night, though, was the Bomber defense. As it has all year long, the defense ruled the game. The Blue Devils were able to sustain long, 11 play drive in the first half but even that ended with a punt at the Richland 44 yard line. Richland's offense on the other hand played very well but was not able to make this game a full blowout thanks to two fumbles and two interceptions. Mistakes they won't have the luxury of making if they hope to make and/or go far in this year's playoffs.
Jake McKinney once again had a stellar game running for 133 yards on 20 carries. Jake scored on a 2 yard run at the end of the second quarter and again at the end of the third quarter for a 28-0 Bomber lead. The Bomber coaches were then able to give some players who hadn't seen playing time their shot in front of their parents and friends. Walla Walla tried to take advantage of this and marched the ball to the Bomber 21 yard line. Matt Watkins overthrew a receiver who tipped the ball into the waiting arms of Malcome Jimmerson and nobody was able to catch him as he ran 79 yards for the touchdown and a 34-0 lead. The Blue Devils were finally able to get on the scoreboard with 1:10 left as backup quarterback Jake Robertson hit Moe Handcox, Jr. on a beautifully thrown 39 yard touchdown pass, making the final score 34-7 Richland.
Next week, the Bombers travel to Yakima to play the Eisenhower Cadets. If Richland can take the game from Ike, they can at least tie for a playoff spot. So, if you're not doing anything next Friday night, take the short 1 hour drive to Zaepfal Stadium, grab a couple Miner burgers, and check out some great football!
